FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Vernon Lifestyle Real Estate Agent launches Ski-In/Ski-Out Score to replace the guesswork on ski homes

VERNON, B.C. – Anyone who has skied SilverStar knows “ski-in/ski-out” can mean very different things from one home to the next. A Vernon real estate agent has launched a free tool that measures the difference.

Until now, the term has been a label that often goes unchecked. The Ski-In/Ski-Out Score turns it into a number, calculated from map and elevation data that covers the route to the lifts, the distance and the difficulty of the runs (green, blue or black). It is live now for homes at SilverStar Mountain Resort, near Vernon.

When someone is thinking about buying a ski chalet at SilverStar, the score gives them a fair way to compare homes. The top end belongs to homes with a green run in and out. A strong skier is happy with a blue or black run, so a lower score can be the right fit. It may appeal to a smaller group of buyers, which can make a home a good fit for the right skier, and sometimes good value. A family with three kids just learning to ski would find the same home impractical. The score weighs all of those factors.

A score of 100 is rare, and it is the one every ski-home buyer wants to see. Only 3 of the 478 SilverStar addresses reach it. One that does is 150 Main Street, a short walk from a green run to the lift.

It is just as handy for people renting a place for a ski vacation. Before they book, they can see exactly where it sits on the resort: how far it is to the lift and which run takes them home. That includes the many visitors from Australia and other countries who ski SilverStar and want to compare places before they arrive.

“Every skier knows how different one ski-in/ski-out home can be from the next, and buyers deserve a number instead of a guess,” says Sean Phillips, Okanagan Lifestyle Real Estate Agent with Coldwell Banker Executives Realty. “The score is an access rating, not a promise that a property is ski-in/ski-out.”

The score is free at realestatesilverstar.ca/ski-score. Phillips is available for interviews.

Quick facts

Is it an official resort rating?
No. It is Sean Phillips’ own estimate from public map data, not issued or endorsed by SilverStar Mountain Resort. It is an access rating, not a promise that a property is ski-in/ski-out; buyers should confirm the route on the snow.
How is it calculated?
From public map and elevation data: the route from the door to a lift, the distance, and the difficulty of the runs. Climbing counts extra: a metre uphill in ski boots, carrying skis, counts as four metres on the flat.
What does a score of 100 mean?
The best-placed homes at SilverStar score 100, and other addresses are scaled to that.
How are runs rated?
With the Canadian green, blue and black symbols. The tool also gives the European colour equivalent for visitors.
Is it free, and where does it show up?
Yes. The public is asked for an email or mobile number before a score is shown; the link on this page skips that step for media. Scores also appear on SilverStar listings at realestatesilverstar.ca.
Who built it?
Sean Phillips, Okanagan Lifestyle Real Estate Agent with Coldwell Banker Executives Realty in Vernon. He is a programmer and a former Google Trusted Photographer (Street View) who photographed SilverStar properties for Google Maps. Read that story.
